Opportunities for medical billing specialists abound from big institutions such
as public and privately-run hospitals, pharmacies, rehabilitation centers, and
huge health maintenance organizations to smaller private clinics and facilities.
There are also other various service providers who are affiliated with these
institutions and private practices who hire for part-time and full-time
positions not just nationwide but worldwide. The United States alone has
outsourced to numerous countries abroad such as India and the Philippines.
A lot of healthcare service providers have now gotten into outsourcing for
several reasons. For one, this enables them to cut off overhead expenses, avoid
payment delays and lost of revenue due to insufficient staff training and
competency, as well as reduce the risk and the accountability for mistakes and
relieve themselves of the stress and anxiety that such mistakes bring. Moreover,
more and more hospitals and clinics have contracted businesses with both large
and small-scale billing firms to help them speed up claims submissions to
insurance companies. Some of these firms also provide opportunities for
home-based medical billing careers through electronic correspondence with an
independent contractor. In addition, there are individuals who take courses or
full-length programs to enter into the profession as an independent entity that
is able to manage and select its clients.
What you should know if you are a medical billing specialist working from
home:
Knowledge is power. It is not enough that you have memorized medical terms and
procedures in order to succeed in this profession. There are things that you
should know in order to commit less mistakes and avoid fraud.
1. Make sure that you enroll in a certified medical billing training program.
You would need both the training as well as the credibility of the
school/program in order to get the position you desire or create and maintain
good relations with healthcare providers, patients, and insurance companies.
2. Be patient and meticulous with your work. Attention to detail is a must. One
wrong entry can result to delay or a rejected claims submission which can lead
to loss of revenue for both you and your client.
3. You must have the ability to investigate and solve problems. You would often
be faced with complicated cases which may require critical thinking on your
part. The ability to prevail over these scenarios would make you more reliable
in the eyes of your client. This skill will also go hand-in-hand with a
background knowledge of insurance guidelines and procedures.
4. Be sure to meet your client’s deadlines. Although you are able to set your
work pace and schedule, you must be able to deliver on time. By meeting your
clients’ needs on time, you are able to boost your credibility which is good
publicity for you.
5. Knowledge does not stop at training. Codes and certain guidelines may shift
one time or another that is why it is very important that you constantly update
yourself with what is happening in the industry and the changes that may affect
your work.
